Marquinhos set for Arsenal medical in London ahead of £3million signing - report

Brazilian winger Marquinhos is in London to complete a medical at Arsenal ahead of becoming their first summer singing, Ryan Taylor reports in The Express.

A £3million deal was agreed last week for the 19-year-old and he could apparently be unveiled as a Gunner as early as Friday (20 May) evening.

He met prospective new manager Mikel Arteta and the squad at the London Colney training ground after arriving on Thursday (19 May).

Edu has reportedly been key to the negotiations between Arsenal and Sao Paulo for the player who will not be available for the final game of the season against Everton.

Taylor’s report says: “Express Sport understands Sao Paulo failed to agree a sell-on clause with Arsenal for the player, despite insisting on a small cut of any figure received through a future sale.

“Furthermore, sources suggest the thinking behind the deal is that the youngster will be a squad/development player and certainly one for the future.”

Early start

Summer business has started early at the Emirates, and after the disappointing end to the season that looks set to see them miss out on the Champions League improvements are going to be needed.

However, Marquinhos looks like he wouldn’t be expected to be a major contributor next season, and is apparently a candidate for a loan move.

If he does exit temporarily he will hope that his career at Arsenal is more substantial than that of another teenage buy in William Saliba, who has still not made his first team debut and looks like he may remain in France.

Brazil under-17 international Marquinhos has made 33 league appearances for Sao Paulo in his career so far and scored two goals.

The diminutive winger will hope to develop into a star in north London as he is due to sign a five-year contract with the club.

That will give him plenty of time to develop, but he will need the likes of Arteta and Edu remain at the club long enough for that to happen, or else he could be swept out by a new regime as appears to have happened with a number of Unai Emery players since former the Gunners midfielder took over.

In other Arsenal news, the club have reportedly reached an agreement with Bologna for Aaron Hickey.
