Reiss Nelson admits Arsenal contract renewal is top priority after brace v Nottingham Forest
Reiss Nelson made the most of his Arsenal cameo on the weekend – coming off the bench to score twice and register an assist against Nottingham Forest.
Nelson was made to wait for his chance to shine at Arsenal, but the 22-year-old took Sunday’s opportunity with both hands as he came on in the Gunners’ 5-0 victory over Forest.
His current Arsenal deal is set to expire in the summer, but Nelson says that he’d jump at the chance to extend his contract at The Emirates.
“I only have some months left on my contract but at this moment of time, getting a new deal, of course, that would be amazing and I would love to commit to the club,” Nelson told the Evening Standard.
“But I’m just really, really focused on doing everything I can possible just to do the right stuff.
“And if I get to play for the team to do well, of course, it’s hard coming in for 5-10 minutes and of course, I would love to play much, much longer. But any opportunity I get, I’m going to try and take and just do my very best and just keep helping the team really.”
An easy decision
Mikel Arteta will be overjoyed to hear Nelson’s latest comments. Provided that the club and the player can agree on a reasonable wage and bonuses, it seems an easy decision to make from Arsenal’s perspective.
Nelson enjoyed a successful loan spell at Feyenoord last season, and he’s seemed to come on leaps and bounds in terms of talent and maturity.
Arteta didn’t rush him into the side, but instead gave Nelson a golden opportunity to shine without pressure being piled on his shoulders.
His brace against Forest showcased his talent, and while it won’t immediately secure Nelson a first-team spot at Arsenal, it will certainly give Arteta something to think about.
The Gunners boast an extremely young squad and Nelson fits right into it. He’s familiar with the club having graduated from the academy, and now seems ready to contribute to the first team.
A renewal to his contract will only give him more confidence and show the club’s faith in him.
