View: Aston Villa starlet Jacob Ramsey can make late push for Gareth Southgate's England World Cup squad
Jacob Ramsey can put himself at the forefront of Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad plans if he keeps up his current electric form for Aston Villa.
The England Under-21 international opened his Premier League account for the season in a crucial win for the Villans and is proving himself to be highly-rated talent.
Ramsey was named Villa’s players player of the season last term and now he can take himself to the next level by getting a spot on the plane to Qatar.
Qatar 2022 is now months away and Ramsey’s terrific early season form has undoubtedly put him into contention for a spot in England’s final squad, it will be tough, but stranger things have happened.
Speaking to the Express and Star, Steven Gerrard played down the World Cup talk surrounding Ramsey’s name.
“From an international point of view there is no rush. He will get there. I know people want to talk about the World Cup at the moment but I don’t think that is fair on him, he has only just broken through into the team here and is becoming a regular.”
Theo-Walcott style pick
Ramsey has everything in his locker to be an elite midfielder and it’s no surprise that his name is being talked about to make Gareth Southgate’s England World Cup squad.
The youngster is starting to come of age and the trust given to him by Gerrard to be his midfield general speaks volumes about how good of a player he is.
This trust won’t have gone unnoticed by Southgate and may be a deciding factor in whether or not he includes the 21-year-old in his final squad.
The England boss could opt for a Theo-Walcott style pick and give Ramsey a last-minute call-up to the squad; an experience of this magnitude would only affect the youngster in a positive fashion.
It may be a bit too late for Ramsey to cement a place in England’s World Cup hopes, nevertheless, he’s doing everything right to give Southgate an uncomfortable decision.
