Celtic receive enquiry from Toulouse for defender Stephen Welsh - Sky Sports

Celtic have received an enquiry from Toulouse for their Scotland under-21 defender Stephen Welsh, according to Sky Sports.

The Hoops have already rejected an offer for the promising defender in January as Udinese approached the club trying to sign the centre-back.

However, Sky Sports have now revealed that the Ligue 1 are the latest club to be told the defender is off limits because the Bhoys’ manager has plans for him at Parkhead.

The Sky Sports report said: “The Ligue 1 side are interested in signing the Scotland U21 international.

“Sky Sports News understands Celtic do not want to sell the 22-year-old, as he is part of Ange Postecoglou’s first-team plans.”

The club remains steadfast on its decision that the 22-year-old is off limits, and continues to rebuff offers from interested clubs.

Welsh came through the youth ranks at Celtic and made his debut for the team in February 2020 in a 4-1 win away at Hamilton Academical at the age of 20.

He has gone on to make 46 appearances for the Bhoys, since making his debut two years ago and is now a part of Postecoglou’s plans and Celtic’s future.

The promising defender has also made 31 appearances for Scotland’s various youth teams and is not far away from receiving a call-up for the senior team.

The then 21-year-old signed a new four-year deal at Celtic Park in April 2021, and his current deal is set to expire in June 2025, showing that the club view his long-term future is in Glasgow.

With the Hoops about to start the defence of their Scottish Premiership title, it is clear to see why they are hesitiatnt to lose such a promising defender, and it looks like it will take a substantial offer to prise Welsh away from the club.

In other news, Brighton are interested in Manchester United defender, Brandon Williams.
