Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel keen on RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol - report

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is reportedly keen on signing RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol this summer.

According to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, the German is keen on signing the 20-year-old as he eyes defensive reinforcements this summer.

With Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger set to leave and Cesar Azpilicueta likely to follow them out of the door, the Blues are in line for an overhaul at the back.

Via his personal Twitter account Plettenberg wrote, “Update #Nkunku: Not only Gvardiol, Tuchel is also highly interested in Nkunku! But: The player has got an offer from Leipzig to extend. They don’t want to sell him in summer.”

Good move?

There have been plenty of defensive woes for Tuchel and Chelsea this season.

The likes of Rudiger and Christensen appear to have downed tools and their performances have been nowhere near good enough.

Even Azpilicueta appears a shadow of his old self and there’s a good chance that he leaves too.

Signing Gvardiol makes a whole lot of sense for Chelsea and they must explore it in further detail.

Not only is he a centre-back, but is equally adept at playing as a left-back as well.

Marcos Alonso has been suspect defensively and there’s no real backup to him in the side with Emerson out on loan and also looking to be on his way out in the summer.

Leipzig surely will play hard ball as Gvardiol is one of their wonderkids, but it remains to be seen how long they can fend off interest from his suitors.

In other Chelsea news, French midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni could be the long term replacement for N’Golo Kante.
