Fabrizio Romano reveals reason Jamal Musiala abandoned Chelsea for Bayern Munich

After eight years in the Chelsea academy, Jamal Musiala swapped London for Munich and the 19-year-old is now deemed a top talent in Germany.

Musiala was born in Stuttgart, Germany, but at a young age he moved to England where he attended Southampton and Chelsea’s academies.

He first joined the Blues in 2011 but left eight years later amid interest from Bundesliga giants. Less than a year after making the switch he was handed his debut for the Bavarian club.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the promise of game time regardless of age was the biggest factor behind Musiala returning to his native Germany.

“It’s not just Musiala, also players like Sancho, Bellingham decided to move to the Bundesliga as they are immediately playing top talents when they are almost ready,” Romano said.

“This makes the difference and that’s why Musiala decided to leave Chelsea for Bayern in 2019. He’s now doing brilliantly for them, so it looks like he made the right choice.”

Return on the cards?

Chelsea will look at Musiala’s progression and kick themselves. The talented winger has scored 12 goals and provided six assists for his teammates in just 21 games this season.

Had the Blues shown a bit more faith in their young talent, there’s a good chance he could still be plying his trade at Stamford Bridge nowadays.

But as mentioned by Romano, Musiala isn’t the only youngster to leave for Germany in a bid to progress quickly – Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham did too, and both are now considered huge talents as a result.

After making their name in Germany though, it seems most stars are tempted by a return to the Premier League when possible. Sancho obviously joined up with Manchester United in 2021 and now Bellingham seems nailed on to return to England with either Manchester City or Liverpool.

Could Musiala make a return to the Premier League and possibly even Chelsea? It’s certainly a possibility, but Romano has ruled it out anytime soon.

Later in his exclusive interview, he insists Musiala is “not planning to leave”.
