Levi Colwill to return to Chelsea this summer, Thomas Tuchel wants a look for first-team - report
Levi Colwill will return to Chelsea this summer and get a chance to prove himself to Thomas Tuchel for a spot in the first team, according to journalist Simon Phillips.
The England Under-21 defender is currently on loan in the Championship with Huddersfield and has enjoyed an excellent season, making 26 appearances in all competitions for the club.
But according to a post on Patreon by Phillips, Tuchel has already made it clear that he wants to take a closer look at the 19-year-old this summer with a view to including him in the first-team picture next season.
“Thomas Tuchel wants to see Levi Colwill in pre-season, with a view of coming into the first-team next season,” he said.
Chelsea are dealing with defensive issues with Andreas Christensen expected to join Barcelona on a free transfer at the end of his contract this summer, while Antonio Rudiger is also out of contract with the club unable to renew his deal under current government restrictions.
Huge future
Colwill is only 19 but he has the world at his feet in terms of the potential he has as a central defender.
The Blues have already seen academy prospects Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi leave for pastures new after failing to get into the Stamford Bridge first-team, with many bemoaning the decision to let them leave.
They’ll be keen not to make the same mistake again with Colwill, and with defensive options looking light for next season this is the perfect opportunity for someone to step up and take their spot in the team.
Anton Ferdinand recently compared Colwill to his brother Rio while appearing on his podcast, while Huddersfield’s head of football operations said he was ‘the best he’s ever seen‘ at his age.
The future is bright and the Cobham academy has got another star on the way, but whether he’ll be in blue or elsewhere remains to be seen.
