Rob Page set for talks with Wales and Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu

Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu has been given a warning by Wales manager Rob Page to ensure his World Cup squad position.

The 21-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea, with the club confirming deals for high-profile defenders such as Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella.

The Welsh manager has warned Amapdu that he cannot afford to sit on the bench with his World Cup place being in jeopardy. [BT Sport]

Page said: “He’s had a pre-season to help him, and it’s great if he’s playing and a part of it.

“But if he’s not, then that’s something he might have to address. I will touch base with him and see how he’s doing.”

The youngster has been on the books of the Blues for six years, but despite showing huge potential, he has never been able to establish himself at the club.

He joined the club in 2016 after impressing at Exeter City and has since left the club on loan three times to three different countries.

Loan spells to Bundesliga club RB Leipzig in 2019, Sheffield United in 2020, and Venezia in Serie A last season, have helped the youngster grow as a player.

During these loan spells, Ampadu has grown significantly, establishing himself as a versatile player who is able to be deployed in several roles.

He has also amassed 35 appearances for his country, amazingly earning more caps for the Welsh national team than for the Blues.

If he cannot get consistent game time at Stamford Bridge, he may have no choice but to leave the club in order to guarantee his place on the plane to Qatar this winter.
