View: Leeds United need to take punt on Mateo Fernandez amid purple patch
Leeds United are currently enduring a torrid time in the Premier League as they languish in the relegation zone with just nine points to their name.
Jesse Marsch is now under serious pressure at Elland Road with a string of tough fixtures to come for the Whites which could give him the license to try out one of the hottest prospects in the country right now.
Mateo Joseph Fernandez may not be English but he is currently out-scoring everybody in Premier League 2 for Leeds United to see them right up near the top of the league.
In just eight Premier League 2 games, the Spaniard has netted 11 goals to put him at the very top of the goal-scoring ranks, two goals clear of West Brom hotshot Reyes Cleary and three ahead of Norwich’s Abu Kamara.
But despite his red-hot purple patch in front of goal, he has not yet been included in any matchday squad for the senior team other than a friendly away at Blackpool prior to the season starting.
You would think that Marsch would be taking a very good look at who is impressing for the youth sides while his senior contingent struggles so much and consider giving them a go.
Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood have both been given chances while Wilfried Gnonto has been on the bench for much of his time in England but neither Fernandez nor the equally in-form Sonny Perkins have got a call just yet.
With Marsch’s job now on the line, he has to try anything he can to find that winning recipe and that could be giving Fernandez his long-awaited chance in the first team.
It might take a brave man to drop Patrick Bamford or Rodrigo to get him in but if they aren’t able to score the goals necessary, give the kid who can’t stop scoring a chance to shine.
