View: Wolves are desperate for a midfield talent like Nico Gonzalez

The central midfield partnership of Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho has been pivotal to the success of Wolves since they returned to the Premier League.

The Portuguese pair have a wonderful affinity with each other but towards the end of the 2021-22 campaign, they couldn’t find that same synchronicity and it really hurt Bruno Lage’s side.

The boss is trying to do something about it and he has identified Barcelona’s 20-year-old Nico Gonzalez as a primary target for this summer transfer window, according to Spanish media outlet SPORT.

The Spanish Under-21 international has broken into Xavi’s first team at the Nou Camp but the Catalan giants need to create funds for new signings and Nico could be a player who is let go to facilitate that.

And with Wolves in pole position to land the Spaniard, fans can get excited because his movement off the ball is that of a player much more experienced than he is.

His agility has helped him get out of many a tricky situation already in his short, yet fledgling Barcelona career and he will continue that at Molineux if he signs.

In this instance, it looks like he is set to pass the ball to his full-back and the midfielder closing him down tries to block the pass but a quick chop inside sees him surging away from the danger zone.

He is very nonchalant prior to these movements too which makes them even more difficult to read as an opposition player.

Once again in this situation, the midfielder closing him down is already trying to press the player who hasn’t yet got the ball so he suddenly changes his trajectory to burst through the gap and into the final third.

Sometimes, the boy doesn’t even need to touch the ball to fool his opponents. In this instance, he lets the ball roll towards him and then does the classic drop of the shoulder to allow the ball to roll past him and leave the midfielder against him with no chance of taking it off him.

Wolves have been lacking this kind of spark in the middle for a little while so it’s good to see them taking the initiative and trying to make a move happen.

In other Wolves news, Lage is also trying to improve his defensive situation and is looking to the Portuguese league for his next target.
