Journalist: Djed Spence isn't ready for Premier League football at Tottenham

We’re delighted to welcome freelance journalist Alex Barker, also known as Euro Expert, who has worked for Breaking The Lines, GFFN and more, as our exclusive columnist. Each week he will be giving his views on the biggest talking points on Wonderkids across the UK…

Djed Spence isn’t being picked for Tottenham because he isn’t ready for Premier League football, according to journalist Alex Barker.

The 21 year old right wing-back burst onto the scene in the Championship last season, helping Nottingham Forest earn promotion before moving to north London.

But he’s so far made just one brief appearance in the top flight under Antonio Conte, who admitted that it wasn’t his choice to sign Spence, and Barker doesn’t see the issue with him being benched right now as he’s not ready.

“It’s interesting,” he told The Football Wonderkids. “When he was signed in the summer, there were a few people, me included, who were saying that watching him – and I’d not watched many games, I think only one – but I’d gone through his extended highlights to really have a good look at him.

“I did think he was quite a raw defender. He was really good going forward, but defensively he was diving into tackles. He had a good tackle success rate last season, I think over 60%, but he did not look like that truly reflected his abilities.

“On it’s own I don’t really have a problem with him being benched. I don’t think he’s ready for Premier League football, maybe that’s what Conte is seeing.

“But the whole situation is a tricky one. It’s not a great situation for Spurs to find themselves in. Maybe in a few months time you’ll see him come through.

“I think with Conte as well, potentially he’ll leave next summer. However this is a very different project to anything else he’s taken on, so he might be creating a path for Spence to bed him in. Or this could be classic Conte who plays experience to get him wins and get him trophies.”
