Scouting expert: Erling Haaland could score 35 PL goals for Manchester City this season
We’re delighted to welcome Football Manager’s Wolves researcher Dave Azzopardi as our exclusive columnist. Each week the scouting expert will be giving his views on the biggest talking points on Wonderkids across the UK…
Erling Haaland could break the Premier League goal record by scoring 35 goals for Manchester City this season, says Dave Azzopardi.
The Norwegian has taken the Premier League for a joke so far, scoring 11 times in seven appearances since joining in the summer from Borussia Dortmund.
The current record for a 38-game season stands at 32 goals in a season, set by Mohammed Salah in 2017/18 while the overall record belongs to Andy Cole and Alan Shearer with 34 in a 42-game season. But Azzopardi feels that Haaland could beat them all, starting with the Manchester derby on Sunday.
“I think he can break it,” he told The Football Wonderkids.
“I was trying to figure it out in my head. In current form he’s going to score a ridiculous amount. I don’t think, he might keep it up but I’d be surprised if he does.

“I think he’s going to break that record. I reckon he could get 34-35 goals. He’s just so.. Even if he’s having a quiet game all he needs is one chance and he’s going to put it in the back of the net. Even the goal against Wolves.
“I was surprised that he put it in the back of the net personally, because it was such a tight angle. It wasn’t a clear-cut chance but he just shot across the defender and it found its way into the back of the net.
“At the minute everything he touches is turning into a goal.
“That [World Cup break] is an advantage for City because at the moment everyone is expecting to see some sort of Pep rotation between him and Alvarez, but he’s started every game so far.
“He’s got a big chance of breaking some records this season.”
