Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana attracting interest Chelsea - report

Young Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana is reportedly attracting serious interest from Chelsea, according the Daily Mail.

The French centre-back is one of the hottest young prospects in the Premier League and has proved to be a revelation since signing for the Foxes in 2020 from Saint-Ettiene for £36.5m [The Guardian].

The Blues were chasing Sevilla’s Jules Kounde, but it looks like Barcelona will beat them to his signature, leaving them forced to find other options.

The report from the Daily Mail’s Adrian Kajumba and Sami Mokbel said: “Chelsea are weighing up a move for Leicester defender Wesley Fofana as they widen their search for a second centre back addition.

“The Blues are considering testing Leicester’s resolve to hang on to their talented young centre-back, with Jules Kounde increasingly likely to join Barcelona.

“Fofana has now emerged as one of the latest names in Chelsea’s sights in their bid to bolster their defence after losing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen this summer.”

Fofana on the move?

The youngster made a great start to life in the Midlands, making 42 appearances in his first season and establishing himself as one of the top young defenders in the country.

The former Saint-Etienne defender unfortunately suffered a leg break in a preseason game before the start of his sophomore campaign and missed 41 games last season, being limited to only seven appearances.

However, the injury didn’t seem to faze him as he came back into the team in a Europa Conference League game in March against Rennes and scored on his return.

Standing at six-foot-three, he is a commanding defender with fantastic recovery pace and tackling ability.

He also has a better tackling percentage than Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, emphasizing the youngster’s defensive ability and potential ceiling.

If Thomas Tuchel is able to secure the signing of Fofana, the club will have one of the Premier League’s most talented upcoming centre-backs, and allowing him to learn from the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly and Thiago Silva can only aid his development.

But from Leicester’s perspective they will be doing everything they can to stop that from happening.

In other Chelsea news, the club have loaned out midfielder Tino Anjorin to Huddersfield.
