Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones could miss up to a month with calf injury - The Athletic

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones is set to miss the start of the season after suffering a calf injury, according to The Athletic’s Caoimhe O’Neill.

The 21-year-old did feature in the Reds’ Community Shield victory against Manchester City on 30 August, however, he picked up the injury soon after that.

The report from the Athletic revealed that the club are still assessing the extent of the injury with Liverpool still waiting to find out the severity of the issue.

O’Neill said: “Curtis Jones is set to miss Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Fulham this weekend following a calf injury he picked up at the weekend,

“Liverpool are now awaiting a specialist opinion on the severity of injury, which could leave him sidelined for between two to four weeks.

“Once the assessment is complete, Liverpool will know more on the extent of the issue.”

“On Sunday ahead of the team’s final pre-season game against Strasbourg he was unavailable and pictured in the stands at Anfield wearing a protective boot on his right leg.”

Unfortunate for Jones

The injury is an unfortunate setback for a player who was hoping to make a bigger impact on the Liverpool team this season.

The England under-21 international is a player with high potential and has excited fans ever since he made his debut for the club in 2018.

Coming through the ranks and representing your boyhood club is the stuff of dreams and so far Jones has been able to live that dream to the fullest.

However, with Jurgen Klopp’s midfield starting to age and show signs of slowing down, an opportunity had arisen for Jones to force his way into the German’s start eleven.

This calf injury, which could make him miss the opening month of the season, will severely slow down that process and could provide an opportunity for the likes of Harvey Elliott to re-establish himself in the first-team after his long-term injury.

Jones will be looking to return from injury as quickly as possible to prevent himself from falling further down the pecking order of the Reds’ stacked and talented midfield.
