Man City superstar Erling Haaland confirms new shirt number

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has confirmed that he will be his new club’s number nine next season, with a video on Twitter.

The Norweigan superstar joined the Sky Blues on 1 July after the club agreed a £85m deal [Sky Sports] with Borussia Dortmund for the striker’s services.

However, after weeks of rumours regarding what shirt number Haaland will wear, he has now seemingly confirmed that he will be taking the departed Gabriel Jesus’s number nine shirt.

The new number nine

Haaland’s move to the Etihad is one of the biggest transfer dealings in recent Premier League history.

The history of football has shown several examples of stars in the prime of their careers leaving the Premier League for other European giants, especially Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas spring to mind, and their transfers highlighted where the power in football was at the time.

However, on this occasion, the star rejected the super Spanish clubs, in favour of coming to England which represents quite a power shift in the game.

A superstar talent in the prime of his career choosing the Premier League ahead of the Spanish powerhouses is an embodiment of where the Premier League currently stands.

They dominate the globe financially compared to other clubs and this has translated into European success, with four of the last five Champions League finals featuring English clubs.

It will be exciting to see how Haaland adapts to the Premier League and his super-stardom has already started to spread through the country.

In other Manchester City news, Southampton have agreed a deal for Romeo Lavia.
