Manchester City loanee Gavin Bazunu tipped to be 'world class' by Portsmouth boss

Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley has tipped on-loan Manchester City goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu to go on to become ‘world class’ after his final appearance for the club.

Bazunu has spent the season at Fratton Park and helped them to a tenth place finish in League One, while establishing himself as the number one for the Republic of Ireland national team.

After featuring in the final game of his loan spell, Cowley told Manchester Evening News that he doesn’t think it will be possible to re-sign the 20-year-old but tipped him to become ‘world class’.

“No, I don’t think that [another loan] would be possible for us,” he said.

“I am always trying to be fair, but I think we have to try and keep people like Hayden Carter and George Hirst [fellow loanees], I genuinely do.

“Whether it would be possible or not, time will tell. We keep talking about trying to be competitive and this is what we have to do if we want to be competitive. Gavin will play in the Premier League.

“Let me tell you now: he is world-class. He will be a world-class goalkeeper.”

Huge praise

For a 20-year-old shot stopper, this season has truly been a breakthrough campaign for the Ireland international.

He has established himself as a top level goalkeeper, keeping 17 clean sheets in 41 appearances for Portsmouth this season and now next season he will look to step up the level of competition he faces.

Bazunu has got excellent distribution with his feet, is very confident when coming to claim the ball from crosses and is an excellent shot stopper too. He showed that with a brilliant penalty save from Cristiano Ronaldo last September for the national team.

Ederson is firmly established as the number one keeper at the Etihad Stadium but Zack Steffen could potentially make way to allow Bazunu some first-team minutes.

Ideally though he would receive another loan in the Championship to play regularly and continue developing before making a push for the starting position with Man City in the future.
