Manchester United miss out on striker Benjamin Sesko to RB Leipzig - Sky Sports

Manchester United have been dealt a blow in the transfer market after missing out on Red Bull Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko, Sky Sports report.

Fabrizio Romano had previously reported that 19-year-old was a target for the Premier League giants, having had multiple meetings with his agent, while Chelsea had held one.

He had mentioned that there was another club in the race, and it appears that other club was sister outfit RB Leipzig in Germany, where he will now go.

According to the Sky Sports report, the youngster will be loaned back to the Austrian side until next year, while the fee will be around £20million.

After scoring 21 goals in 29 games while on loan at FC Liefering in the Austrian second tier in the 2020/21 season, the Slovenian international returned to his parent club to score 11 in 37 largely substitute appearances in all competitions, attracting the attention of giants across Europe.

Hot shot

It is certainly a blow for Erik Ten Hag to miss out on Sesko as he looks like exactly the sort of player that United have historically thrived with.

After the deflating 2-1 loss to Brighton in the opening match of the season on Sunday (7 August), and the ongoing uncertainty with ageing superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, a highly-rated young goalscorer could have the ideal move to bring the fans back on side.

Supporters of the Old Trafford club are already on edge at the idea that they are set for another mediocre season, after a transfer window where they have failed to land their primary targets, and this will not help with that.

There is not the same streak of youth running through the Red Devils as there was back in the Sir Alex Ferguson years, although it is still a key feature of the club.

But many things aren’t running as they did when the side were serial trophy winners, as they would more than likely have triumphed in the race for Sesko then.

Compounding the issue for fans currently is the fact that not only will they be signing an up and coming potential star, but they are apparently in the running for 33-year-old Marko Arnautovic from Bologna, which is a problem for various reasons.

With the ultimate wonderkid Erling Haaland arriving on the other side of Manchester and scoring twice in City’s 2-0 win at West Ham, the latest news about the teenage Red Bull star will be all the harder to swallow.

In other Manchester United news, the club are set to send Charlie Wellens out on loan.
