Manchester United teenager Charlie Savage signs new long-term deal

Manchester United midfielder Charlie Savage has signed a new long-term contract with the club, the player confirmed on his Twitter account.

The teenager, who is the son of former United youth team player Robbie, has signed a deal that runs until 2025 with the option of a further years, according to BBC Sport.

He has yet to feature in the Premier League but made his first team debut this season as a late substitute for Juan Mata in the Champions League game against Young Boys.

In a post on his Twitter account he wrote: “Great way to end an amazing season.

“Delighted to sign a long-term contract with this special club.

“Thank you to my family for their support, without them it would never have been possible.

“Time for a short break before going again.”

New generation

Although making your debut for the senior side would always constitute an “amazing season” for an academy player, it has been anything but for the club as a whole.

Embarrassing heavy defeats put an end to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s time as manager, and then the ill-fated Ralf Rangnick experiment actually saw the form get worse.

With Erik ten Hag incoming after winning the Eredivisie with Ajax there is likely to be major changes at the club, and many fans will hope to see more from the likes of Savage and the younger generation.

He has already surpassed his father by making it into the first team at Old Trafford, but if he or any of his fellow academy graduates can come anywhere close to Savage Senior’s contemporaries in the Class of ’92 it would be a huge boost for the club.

Missing out on Champions League football was a major blow, but hopes are once again high that the new manager can change things.

Welsh under-19 international Savage was a regular contributor in Premier League 2 this season, featuring 21 times and scoring two goals, but will surely be looking to turn some of those outings into senior appearances in the top flight next season.

In other Manchester United news, the club are reportedly pushing ahead to make Jurrien Timber ten Hag’s first signing from Ajax.
