Manchester United trigger contract extension for Dylan Levitt - report

Manchester United have decided to extend the contract of Welsh midfielder Dylan Levitt for another season, according to The Mirror.

The 21-year-old spent the 2021-22 season on loan at Scottish Premiership side Dundee United who were hoping that he would leave Old Trafford this summer so they could swoop to sign him on a free transfer.

He was the Fans’ Player of the Season at Tannadice after scoring six times in 29 games and that has been enough for Erik Ten Hag to want to take a look at the Welshman during pre-season.

Levitt is keen to play senior football in the 2022-23 season knowing that if he finds form, he could be selected for the Wales squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar should they defeat Ukraine in the final European playoff.

With this extension triggered, he now has just 12 months left on his deal at Old Trafford and may leave on a free transfer next summer if he doesn’t impress enough to warrant a new deal with the club he’s played for since he was eight.

Levitt has been one of those players right on the fringes of getting his chance for Manchester United for a couple of years but he has since seen Hannibal Mejbri jump the queue and get a chance towards the end of Ralf Rangnick’s reign.

It will have been a kick in the teeth for the Welshman who decided to graft his way in Scotland rather than wait around in the academy for a chance and it should be a move that gains him credit, especially after how well he played.

But if he wants to have a proper career as a United player, then he needs to be unplayable in pre-season and force Ten Hag to make him a part of his plans through outstanding performances which threatens the places of Scott McTominay and Fred.

If he fails to impress before the Premier League season kicks off though, he can kiss goodbye to any hopes of being a regular at Old Trafford and he might as well start looking for his next destination straight away.

In other Manchester United news, the Red Devils could be set to miss out on the potential signing of this teenager who’s starred in the EFL this season.
