After winning their last two European clashes in their group, Erik ten Hag could rotate his side on Thursday, with a Premier League clash against Newcastle United on the horizon.

That could make space for Mainoo, who impressed for United during their FA Youth Cup run last season.

Time to impress

Having clearly caught Ten Hag’s eye in the youth setup, Mainoo has been given an opportunity to shine by the Dutchman.

Even if the 17-year-old doesn’t step foot on the Old Trafford turf on Thursday, simply being part of the first-team squad is a huge achievement at his age, and something Ten Hag will hope spurs him on in his development.

Mainoo scored twice in United’s cup run last season, and his dazzling technical ability drew the attention of the Old Trafford faithful.

Christian Eriksen is in desperate need of a break after playing in every game since his summer arrival, and the Dane being rested opens up a spot for Mainoo to shine.

Furthermore, if United do win on Thursday and practically confirm their qualification from the group, then there could be plenty of other opportunities for youngsters in the final two group games against Sheriff Tiraspol and Real Sociedad.
