Burnley to sign Manchester City teen CJ Egan-Riley, Taylor Harwood-Bellis may follow - report

Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has raided his former side for CJ Egan-Riley, according to Alan Nixon on Patreon.

The teenage defender has moved to Burnley for an initial £300,000, which could rise to £400,000 based on appearances.

There is also a “chunky slice” of any future sale involved in the form of a sell-on clause, after the Clarets overcame Championship rivals West Brom and Coventry to sign him.

In addition, Kompany wants to bring in fellow young City defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis on loan, and there is confidence he will beat Celtic to do so.

The exit, that could become two exits, come hot on the heels of winger Sam Edozie having a deal agreed for him to join Bayer Leverkusen.

The new boss at Turf Moor has a squad overhaul to content with after the club were relegated from the Premier League.

James Tarkowski has signed for Everton on a free transfer while long-time captain Ben Mee is also leaving on a free transfer.

New cycle

Kompany should probably know what a talented defender looks like at the Etihad having been one himself for so long.

And he will have to hope that the double-barred duo can emulate another pair of defensive talents who made the same move a decade ago.

Kieran Trippier and Mee both followed loan spells at Burnley in 2011 with permanent moves a year later, leaving City with just a single League Cup appearance by the latter between them, and both turned out to be pretty decent players.

Egan-Riley, 19, has made three first team appearances under Pep Guardiola, including one each in the Premier League and Champions League, while 20 year old Harwood-Bellis is yet to feature.

The older of the two has made three loan moves already however, featuring fairly regularly for Blackburn and Stoke, either side of a six-month spell with Kompany at Anderlecht.

If he is successful under the 36 year old Belgian manager again he could be in line for a permanent move of his own.

In other Manchester City news, Leeds are set to sign Darko Gyabi for £5million.
