Danny Cowley lauds West Brom loanee Josh Griffiths after display v Morecambe

Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley was full of praise for Josh Griffiths after the West Brom loanee made a number of “fantastic” saves against Morecambe.

Griffiths has been unfairly targetted by the Fratton faithful in the 2022/23 season but produced an eye-catching performance to earn Cowley’s side a point.

The Pompey boss feels the goals his side have conceded have not been down to the 21-year-old, with opponents scoring with their only shot on target.

“I thought Josh was excellent. I’ve been really frustrated in recent weeks and he has as well with opponents scoring with every shot on target,” said Cowley (Twitter, 12 November).

“None of the goals have been his fault by the way, but today he had to make some saves and he made some fantastic saves when he was called upon.”

Learning curve

This loan spell is a big learning curve for the West Brom youngster who will be far better off as a result. Previous stints and Cheltenham and Lincoln have given him some league experience, but the pressures and demand at Fratton Park are unlike what he has experienced before.

Portsmouth are expected to get promoted, and when things aren’t going well the fans will make their opinions heard. The expectations are similar at The Hawthorns and to have a young keeper who can deal with pressure is a massive bonus for the Baggies.

After taking some flack at the start of the season, it’s good to see Griffiths receive some deserved praise. It’s now down to the youngster to push on and keep improving week on week. With Alex Palmer in good form at the moment, remaining out on loan is the best thing for Griffiths for the remainder of this season.
