Journalist: Liverpool suffer 'pretty big blow' as Aurelien Tchouameni signs for Real Madrid

Liverpool missing out on Aurelien Tchouameni is a “pretty big blow” for them according to journalist Zach Lowy, after his £85m move to Real Madrid was confirmed [June 11].
The Champions League and Premier League runners-up were linked with a big-money move for the France international this summer, with Fabrizio Romano reporting on June 7th that Jurgen Klopp had personally spoken to the player.
But after the Spanish giants confirmed a deal worth up to £85m total, Lowy believes that they’re paying for potential and not just his current form and ultimately Kylian Mbappe’s decision to stay in France may have been the tipping point in the deal.
“I think that is a pretty big blow for Liverpool,” he told The Football Wonderkids.
“I said like two weeks ago at the time when Kylian Mbappe revealed his decision to renew, I was saying that one of the biggest winners actually would be Monaco. Because they are going to make an extra €35m on his renewing because of a clause in the contract, and also I felt that Real Madrid would be trying to fight off interest from Liverpool and also Paris Saint-Germain.
“I know that Mbappe has played a big part in their push to sign Tchouameni so I did think that it was going to create more of a bidding war, so yeah it did seem like Real Madrid have definitely paid what they were going to spend on Mbappe.
“Obviously they still have plenty left over, but I think that Madrid realised they needed to complete this business early because while they may be paying over the odds, it’s better to do that than wait and potentially miss out on your top target. Especially after you got embarrassed by PSG [for Mbappe].
“Yeah absolutely [he’ll make an impact immediately]. I do feel like you’re paying for potential. You don’t pay 100 or 80 million for just the current Tchouameni, but you pay 80, 100m whatever it is to make sure that Liverpool or [PSG] does not steal your target.
“I feel like he will make an impact, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to start. Because obviously they have Luka Modric, Casemiro, Fede Valverde, it’s very tough competition.
“But as we’ve seen with other young players such as Camavinga, Militao, Valverde, Real Madrid know how to blood in young players. They aren’t going to just blow the door open, even if they’re paying a lot of money so he’s going to have to earn his spot.
“I think he’ll make a swift adaptation from Ligue 1 to La Liga.”
Liverpool have already signed young forward Fabio Carvalho from Fulham on a permanent deal this summer, while 22-year-old Darwin Nunez is reportedly close to a £85m deal to join from Benfica [Record, June 9].
