Leeds United: Joe Gelhardt must start v Spurs with Marcelo Bielsa failing to find answer

Leeds United take on Spurs on Saturday afternoon (26 February) in the Premier League and it is the perfect time to start Joe Gelhardt once again.

Marcelo Bielsa must stop these experiments in the final third, with Rodrigo not used as a centre-forward and Dan James struggling after those goals at Aston Villa.

Gelhardt came off the bench against Manchester United and looked dangerous, and he was then trusted at Anfield despite Leeds being smashed by Liverpool.

Gelhardt got one of his two Premier League starts of the season in the reverse fixture, and he was a real handful throughout the game for the likes of Eric Dier.

Leeds need an out-and-out number nine, with Patrick Bamford no closer to a return from his dreadful injury at Elland Road as the season enters its final months.

Looking at the stats of the 19-year-old teen via WhoScored, Gelhardt stacks up well to the international pedigree of Rodrigo and James in the final third and could easily make a difference.

Gelhardt has completed more dribbles per game than his teammates (1.3) and draws even more fouls using his physicality (1.6) – nearly double the number of James.

The Spaniard delivers more key passes, but that is to be expected given he plays in the deeper playmaker role at Elland Road, and that isn’t what Gelhardt is there to do.

Leeds are desperate for three points in their quest for Premier League survival, and it may be time to put that pressure onto the shoulders of their main wonderkid.

Gelhardt is more than ready for the challenge, and he could make a real difference at Elland Road if he is given that chance by Bielsa.
