Pep Guardiola praises Rico Lewis intelligence after Manchester City win over Sevilla

Pep Guardiola has praised Rico Lewis’ intelligence after the 17-year-old scored for Manchester City in their 3-1 Champions League victory over Sevilla.

Lewis equalised for City in the 52nd minute as Guardiola’s side put in a dominant second-half performance to bring their group-stage campaign to a close.

Talking after the game, the Spaniard suggested the young full-back “has something special” after making his full debut for the club.

“We don’t give presents, he had to earn it. We have seen him since day one in pre-season and I said: this guy has something special,” said Guardiola (quoted by Fabrizio Romano, 3 November).

“He’s so clever, so intelligent. If you say something, he understands everything. I’m so happy.”

Big moment

Scoring on his first full start for City is a memorable moment for the youngster and he will now be hoping to kick on and make an impression in the Premier League for Guardiola’s side. At 17, he had done extremely well to be in contention for one of the best teams in the world at present.

Under Guardiola, he has the best coach possible to steer him through an important stage in his development. We will almost certainly see more of Lewis in cup competitions this season, with the League Cup and FA Cup the perfect chance for him to get more minutes under his belt.

He could also be a name to keep an eye on when it comes to the international stage in years to come. Lewis should be looking to emulate the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold who broke onto the scene at a similar age and has gone on to be one of the best full-backs in the modern game.

Lewis is a name we should all be keeping an eye on in the years to come.
