Stan Collymore: Liverpool should have blown Borussia Dortmund out of the market to sign Jude Bellingham
Trevor Sinclair believes that Liverpool should have loosened the pursestrings to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham this summer.
The Reds ended up bringing Arthur Melo on a season-long loan from Juventus as Jurgen Klopp wanted midfield reinforcements.
Bellingham, 19, has been a Liverpool target and was linked with a move to Anfield this summer, but the transfer never came close to fruition.
Sinclair told Caught Offside,” James Milner shouldn’t be called upon to be a key member of the team.
“As a club that’s aiming for Champions League, champions of England, he should be a bit part player, he’s earned that right.
“Jordan Henderson, great captain, Liverpool legend. But again, you’re looking for an upgrade.
“Liverpool have midfield problems. Liverpool fans know that.
“We’ve been talking about Jude Bellingham. I would’ve gone in and blown them [Borussia Dortmund] out of the market this window.
“The notion that FSG don’t have the money is ridiculous.”
Not as easy
Everyone including Jurgen Klopp knew that a midfielder was the club’s Achilles heel and signing one was of paramount importance.
They signed Arthur as Thiago’s absence through injury showed just how frail this current midfield was and it was necessary to bring in a stopgap option through the door.
Bellingham has been a target at Anfield for several months but it was always going to be difficult to do business with Dortmund this summer.
They lost Erling Haaland to Manchester City and were not prepared for two big-name departures.
Possibly, a British record fee would’ve been needed to lure him away this summer – something FSG were not prepared to do.
However, if they are to compete with City then these are things they have to do in order to be legitimate title contenders.
