View: Hugo Ekitike is serious talent who could be new fan favourite at St James' Park
Newcastle United are reportedly closing in on a deal for Reims’ France under-20 international Hugo Ekitike as revealed by Fabrizio Romano on 4 June.
The Italian journalist revealed on Twitter that Newcastle United and Reims have reached an agreement for the 18-year-old and his underlying statistics should excite Newcastle fans.
Ekitike has twelve goal involvements in Ligue 1 in the 2021-22 campaign and is averaging just over a goal every other game, which is impressive for an 18-year-old.
His expected goals of 0.42 is slightly below his actual output, which could mean he is slightly overperforming.
However, it is important to remember that the striker is only 18 and could develop far beyond the numbers he is amassing at present.
Despite being 18, the youngster is not afraid to take the game to the opposition and make things happen.
He averages an extremely high 5.14 dibbles per game with a success rate of 50% and has two shots per game with 60% of them being on target.
The youngster could be the answer to Newcastle’s striking problems and not just for the short term.
If the move goes through, then Eddie Howe will have a striker who could prove to be a huge asset for the Magpies going forward.
It is important to note that Ekitike is far from the finished product, and may not hit the ground running considering his age.
However, under the stewardship of Howe, the French youngster could well become a hero on Tyneside.
