View: Marquinhos should get Premier League chance after electric Arsenal debut

19-year-old Arsenal winger Marquinhos’ debut should have fans craving for the Brazilian to be unleashed into Mikel Arteta’s Premier League plans.

Marquinhos scored and assisted in the Gunners’ 2-1 win over Zurich in what was an electric 70-minute display.

His ability to produce quality from wide positions was there for all to see and his underlying statistics backed up what was evident on the pitch.

The Brazilian’s crossing was noticeably impressive with Marquinhos amassing an 80 per cent crossing accuracy from the five deliveries he attempted, as per Wyscout.

Furthermore, his expected goals for the Gunners Europa League opener was only marginally (0.07) higher than what he has averaged throughout his career.

This is a good sign for Arteta as it displays that he is not overperforming and that the display he put in on Thursday evening was not a one-off performance.

Considering he is a wide player, who likes to beat his man and get the ball into dangerous areas, his ability to look after the ball and rarely lose possession was impressive.

He managed an 87 per cent pass accuracy and had a 100 per cent pass accuracy to the final third, which demonstrates that whilst looking to make stuff happen offensively, he also has the quality to deliver the correct pass.

Furthermore, he attempted six dribbles with a 50 per cent success rate which demonstrates his eagerness to get at his opposing player.

His debut was the ideal start for the Brazilian to have Arsenal fans begging for more, but it’s also important that Arteta eases him into Premier League proceedings with the odd substitute appearance.

Marquinhos is only 19 and has plenty of time to develop whilst at the Emirates. This is certainly one for Arsenal fans to get excited about.
