View: Sergio Gomez can be adaptable dream for Guardiola as Man City reportedly reach verbal agreement

Manchester City target Sergio Gomez is reportedly close to completing a move to the Premier League champions and his versatility will interest manager Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola is a manager known for liking adaptable players, with favourites of his like Phil Foden, Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, John Stones and Joao Cancelo all playing major roles in his team.

Gomez, 21, is now said to be on his way to Man City with Fabrizio Romano reporting on 10 August that a verbal agreement has been reached with Anderlecht for a fee worth over £8.4million.

A post on the Rising Ballers Instagram account shows how the Anderlecht full-back has played in every position on the pitch other than in goal, centre-back, or upfront.

Another Versatile player for Pep?

To play for Pep Guardiola, being able to play several positions will be a big plus in a player’s quest to succeed in his team.

A player like Phil Foden who can play on either wing, in attacking midfield, or in a false-nine role has excelled in Pep’s system because of his ability to be deployed anywhere his talents are required.

Joao Cancelo has become one of the best left-backs in world football despite being a natural right-back and could be deployed in other roles if the chance came.

Such is his attacking quality, he could probably be deployed in a central midfield role, which would probably explain why he was recently given the number seven shirt.

The Spanish left-back is not only versatile but an attacking weapon, a necessary ability if you are to be a full-back in a Guardiola system.

Last season, in 49 appearances, he scored seven goals and provided an outstanding 15 assists, an even better stat line than Cancelo who scored three goals and provided 10 assists in 52 games last season, albeit in a much stronger league.

Being as two-footed as he is, malleable and attack-oriented, it looks like he will have no issues seamlessly fitting into the Citizen’s team going forward.

In other Manchester City news, a scouting expert has predicted that Erling Haaland will score 20-25 goals this season.
