West Brom goalkeeper Josh Griffiths linked with summer loan move to League One Portsmouth
West Brom keeper Josh Griffiths has been linked with a loan move to Danny Cowley’s Portsmouth, as revealed by talkSPORT’s Alex Crook.
The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Lincoln and was previously subject to interest from Pompey as reported by Hampshire Live last summer [31 May 2021].
Pompey boss Cowley is looking to replace Gavin Bazunu after his excellent loan spell and a loan move for the Baggies youngster has been suggested.
Crook wrote on his personal Twitter account [9 June]: “Pompey are looking to sign West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Josh Griffiths on loan.”
Great signing
This would be an excellent piece of business for Pompey to ease to blow of losing Bazunu, but surely Griffiths should’ve been given a shot in the West Brom number one shirt?
He’s only 20 and has two full seasons of League experience under his belt, including a promotion with Cheltenham Town from League Two.
Giving younger, homegrown players a chance can by managers time with reluctant fan bases and Bruce would be wise to stifle any potential move away for the young keeper.
Pompey’s long-standing interest in the keeper won’t go away and if he was to be let go, a move to the Island city would seem the most viable option for the keeper.
The Baggies would know the keeper is in excellent hands at Pompey, with Cowley having an excellent record in nurturing younger players and developing them further.
Just looking at how Bazunu faired at Fratton Park should give the Baggies hope he will be able to continue his excellent development.
