Southampton lead race to sign Man United midfielder James Garner - report
Southampton are reportedly leading the race to sign Man United youngster James Garner, according to Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst.
The 21-year-old has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford after it became apparent that he is not in manager Erik Ten Hag’s plans.
However, the report from Luckhurst has revealed that the Saints are now frontrunners to sign the midfielder. [Manchester Evening News]
Garner to Southampton
The fact the club is letting such a promising youngster leave with such a gaping hole in that position is confusing and underlines the state of the Red Devils at the moment.
The defensive midfielder, made 48 appearances, scoring four goals and providing 10 assists as his performances helped the club win the play-off and achieve promotion to the Premier League.

30 of these appearances were in the defensive midfield position, and he was able to show his ability in interceptions, set pieces, and incisive, key passes.
He has received some minutes during the club’s pre-season, most notable playing 73 minutes in their pre-season draw against Rayo Vallecano, but it is time that he is given a fair chance in the first team.
If the Saints are able to get hold of him, it would be a real coup for the club and fit into their pattern of signing young players, following the likes of Sekou Mara, Gavin Bazunu, and Romeo Lavia.
In other Southampton news, the club are yet to move for Joshua Zirkzee.
