View: Sekou Mara can be solution of Southampton attacking problems

Southampton started the campaign eager to improve what they did last season as they finished in 15th position with 40 points in the Premier League.

One of the primary reasons why the Saints struggled in the 2021-22 campaign was the lack of goalscoring options for Ralph Hasenhuttl after the departure of Danny Ings who joined Aston Villa.

To address this issue, Southampton have signed young striker Sekou Mara from French club Bordeaux in a deal worth £11.7million.

Time to give more minutes

This season, Southampton are facing similar problems as they are placed in the 12th position in the league table with just seven points after the first six matches, largely because of scoring not enough goals after netting just seven times.

That problem might well be solved if manager Hasenhuttl decides to give more minutes to his new signing instead of giving more chances to players like Che Adams and Adam Armstrong.

The 20-year-old has only played 123 minutes across all competitions this season, 99 of which came in the Premier League where he managed to provide an assist.

Mara was impressive for his side in Ligue 1 last season where he netted six times in just 26 appearances [Transfermarkt].

The France U20 international has a unique combination of pace and strength that can be deadly for the opposition’s defensive units.

Not only that but his aerial threat might also be perfect for someone like James Ward-Prowse who is famous for his set-piece delivery.
