Levi Colwill could join Brighton on loan as Chelsea move for Marc Cucurella - report

Levi Colwill could join Brighton on loan from Chelsea as part of a deal that takes Marc Cucurella to Stamford Bridge, according to Simon Phillips.

The blues have made a move to sign Spanish left-back Cucurella in a £50m deal after his protracted transfer to Manchester City stalled, but they are looking to include the talented Colwill as part of the deal too.

Brighton have an interest in the central defender and while he was expected to leave permanently should more defenders arrive at Stamford Bridge, the journalist says that he believes it will be a loan.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, Phillips said; “Haven’t had it confirmed, but I feel that if Levi Colwill goes to Brighton as part of a deal to sign Marc Cucurella, I think it’ll be a loan.”

Leicester, Southampton and Crystal Palace have also been linked with a move for the 19-year-old who spent last season on loan at Huddersfield.

Smart

Brighton have made it really clear that Cucurella won’t leave for less than £50m, but if they can use the negotiations to bring in a talented young defender like Colwill then it could work out well.

With the way that Graham Potter likes to play football he likes his defenders to be comfortable on the ball and that is one of Colwill’s greatest strengths.

During his spell with Huddersfield he was able to show his physical attributes with great speed and an ability to duel with opposition attackers, but also he was key to them building up from the back en route to the Championship play-off final.

Premier League competition for his signature is rife, but with Cucurella intent on leaving the club for pastures new they may as well use the negotiations to get in a target of their own and better the squad.

Colwill would add depth and quality to their team and could prove to be a delayed replacement for Ben White, who signed for Arsenal last summer in a £50m deal.
