Wolves close in on £30m Sporting Lisbon defender Goncalo Inacio - report

Wolves are getting ever closer to signing Sporting Lisbon left-back Goncalo Inacio in a massive, eight-figure transfer, according to The Mirror.

The 20-year-old has been on the radar of Molineux for some time and representatives of the two clubs are set to meet next week to finalise the details of the deal.

He currently has a buyout clause in his contract of £39million but the Portuguese side need to build funds for a rebuild of their squad and so will accept less from Wolves, likely to be closer to £30million.

Bruno Lage also needs to add new faces to his squad with previous full-back Marcal leaving the club on a free transfer, as is Romain Saiss and goalkeeper John Ruddy.

Inacio, an Under-21 international for Portugal, currently has a contract in Lisbon until 2026 but Wolves are keen to ensure that it doesn’t run its course.

Inacio will be a great signing for Wolves but you can’t help but think that maybe left-back wasn’t the position they desperately needed reinforcements.

Lage already has Rayan Ait-Nouri at his disposal and the academy has a couple of promising young full-backs to boot but maybe they see this deal as a bargain they couldn’t refuse.

The Wolves boss clearly wants to lay out the foundation for this club to succeed in the future with the 20-year-old set to be his first summer signing but he needs significant backing from Jeff Shi if he’s to see progress from last season’s top-half finish.

A good run of results throughout the winter helped t mask their dreadful form in 2022 and keep them far away from any relegation trouble but if the investment is limited this summer, Lage will have a very tough task on his hands to keep them away from the drop.

In other Wolves news, the Black Country club are very keen to keep hold of one of their promising young talents who starred on loan in 2021-22.
